Since 1917, employee-owned Shields Harper & Company, (SHC) has been a leader in the distribution of fueling equipment. With eight locations in three states, products and services include fuel tanks, dispensers, electronic control systems, environmental monitoring systems, electric vehicle (EV) chargers, payment systems, convenience store food service equipment, and Point of Sale systems. The company also offers additional support, such as CAD drawings (for site construction/remodeling) and environmental compliance recommendations.


SHC’s integrated systems are installed at airports, fleets, commercial and retail sites, and facilities requiring emergency power systems, such as data centers and hospitals. Contractors, architects, designers and engineers appreciate the expertise of SHC’s well-trained and technical staff, to help them specify the appropriate equipment and design the systems for the highly regulated areas in which they operate. SHC sells directly to individual site owners, industrial accounts, governments and contractors, as well as corporations who own fleets of fueling sites.


As a systems integrator, the company is primarily a wholesale sales and distribution organization. SHC continues to grow, and expects to have many more decades of success with changes in energy storage and delivery. Main suppliers include several top publicly traded corporations, such as Dover, Danaher, Franklin and Verifone. SHC uses more than 120 suppliers to support its sales needs. SHC also has customers beyond the physical branch locations, including the Pacific Northwest through Alaska, Pacific islands from Hawaii to Guam, and various customer locations throughout the US and Canada.


SHC is implementing a new ERP System, Epicor Profit 21 (P21) and is developing an e-commerce presence.


In this newly created role, the Director of Supply Chain will develop and implement distribution and supply chain strategies for Purchasing, Logistics and Warehouse/Inventory.

Position Overview:

Direct and improve supply chain planning, purchasing and fulfillment. Manage purchasing, logistics and warehouse/inventory to establish synergies. This role requires an effective change agent who is able to help transition departments and employees into a newly optimized supply chain strategy.


Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with CFO to assess vendor discount and rebate programs, as they relate to strategic corporate buys. Develop standardized purchasing program throughout the company and branches.
  • In coordination with the leadership team, maintain vendor relationships. Evaluate existing and potential vendors.   Evaluate existing and potential vendors.
  • Partner with sales and operations to ensure proper inventory levels and availability.
  • Develop short term and long range inventory purchasing forecasts.
  • Control inventory levels through internal controls and warehouse management.
  • Negotiate and coordinate freight and logistics.  Analyze and control costs of logistics. Determine whether to continue to utilize outside logistics services, or bring logistics in-house.
  • Responsible for inventory, ordering, and purchase forecasting modules within ERP.
  • Manage a purchasing team and an Inventory Manager, (who is responsible for warehouse management and all branch warehouse staff across eight locations).
  • Utilize/re-implement ERP supply chain functionality.




The company realizes that every interested candidate might not have all of the desired experience, and some training will be provided, but here is what they are looking for in terms of experience and skills… the more you have, the better!


  • Minimum of 10 years of post-grad professional experience, with at least five years of supply chain management required.
    • Purchasing, Warehouse/Inventory and Logistics experience required.
  • Strong leadership and negotiation skills needed.
  • Independent, self-starter with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Requires independent time management, strong attention to detail and excellent analytical skills.
  • Broad strategic thinker, who is willing/able to be very hands-on with guiding change.
  • Experience interacting with cross functional teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to transition back and forth between strategic/management and tactical hands-on.
  • Essential computer skills required (MS Office, ERP systems).
    • Epicor Prophet 21 preferred.
  • Must be punctual and dependable.
  • Periodic travel is required. (West coast day travel and infrequent vendor visits).




Bachelor’s degree required (business, accounting or economics preferred).
